Step 1: Navigate to the AWS user guide, which has links to download Kubectl for Windows,
Mac, and Linux.
The link is: Set up
kubectl and eksctl
Note: the author has a Windows machine, the below screenshots are for Windows. Also note that
the author will use the "quick configuration" EKS option, so he will not download and install eksctl.
-
Step 2: Scroll down to the Windows section and copy the command for the correct version of Kubectl.
The author used the latest version, which was 1.36 at the time of this writing.
-
Step 3: Open PowerShell. If needed, navigate to the directory where you want to download the
Kubectl file (the author used the "bin" folder created in a previous step by step guide).
Paste the command and press enter. Note: installing and configuring PowerShell was covered in
a previous step by step guide.
-
Step 4: Next, update the "PATH" environment variable to include the directory where you downloaded
the Kubectl file. The author used the "bin" folder created in a previous step by step guide.
To do so, open the windows "Start" menu and type "environment" in the search bar.
Click on "Edit the system environment variables".
-
Step 5: On the new window that appears, click on the "Environment Variables" button.
-
Step 6: A new window will appear. In the "System variables" section, scroll down and select
the "Path" variable. Click on the "Edit" button.
-
Step 7: In the new window that appears, click on the "New" button and enter the path to the
directory where you downloaded the kubectl file. The author used the "bin" folder created on the "C"
drive in a previous step by step guide.
-
Step 8: Close and re-open VSCode. Open a new terminal and type "kubectl version --client"
to verify that Kubectl is installed and working in VS Code. This completes this guide.
